Otti Urges Overhaul of Energy Strategy, Warns Against Past Mistakes

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s energy strategy, warning that clinging to outdated approaches could hinder the nation’s economic growth and energy security.

Speaking at a recent energy forum in Umuahia, Otti emphasized the urgent need for a forward-looking energy policy that embraces renewable energy sources, reduces carbon emissions, and prioritizes energy independence. He highlighted the lessons from past policy missteps that have left Nigeria grappling with unreliable power supply and escalating energy costs.

“We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past if we truly want to transform our energy sector,” Otti stated. “Nigeria has enormous potential, from solar and wind to hydro and biomass, yet we remain overly dependent on fossil fuels. This is not just unsustainable – it is a strategic miscalculation.”

Otti further stressed that a modern energy strategy should focus on innovation, investment in smart grid technology, and local manufacturing of renewable energy components. He also called for increased private sector participation to drive efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the energy sector.

A Call for Long-Term Vision

The governor also pointed out that a successful energy transformation requires a clear long-term vision, coupled with decisive political leadership and policy stability. He urged federal authorities to create an enabling environment for investors, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and promote transparency in the energy sector.

“Energy is the lifeblood of any economy. If we continue to rely on the same outdated methods, we risk stalling our economic progress and missing out on the green energy revolution that is reshaping the global landscape,” Otti warned.

A Path Forward

Otti’s bold call for an energy overhaul has sparked discussions among industry leaders, who agree that a more resilient, diversified energy strategy is critical for Nigeria’s future. Experts say the governor’s vision, if embraced, could lead to significant economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

As Nigeria continues its journey toward energy reform, Otti’s words serve as a timely reminder that the path forward must be built on innovation, resilience, and a break from the mistakes of the past.
