Seun Kuti Reacts to Calls to Free VDM: “Let Him Face the Music

In the midst of growing social media campaigns demanding the release of controversial podcaster and online critic, VeryDarkMan (VDM), Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has broken his silence—and his words are making waves.

Following VDM’s recent arrest, which many believe is politically motivated due to his relentless call-outs of celebrities and alleged injustice within the system, fans and activists have taken to various platforms with the hashtag **#FreeVDM**, sparking debates across the country.

But Seun Kuti, never one to shy away from controversial opinions himself, has taken a different stand.

In a viral Instagram live session on Sunday, Seun Kuti expressed little sympathy for VDM’s situation. “Everybody shouting ‘free this, free that’—what about facing the music when you break the law?” he said. “This country is not lawless. If you insult people and cross lines, be ready for the consequences.”

He acknowledged VDM's role in shedding light on societal issues, but insisted that accountability must remain part of the conversation.

“Being a freedom fighter doesn’t give you a free pass to be reckless,” Kuti added. “I’ve been locked up before too, I know what it’s like. But I stood by what I did.”

The musician’s blunt response has divided social media. While some applaud his candidness and call for responsibility, others accuse him of betraying a fellow truth-speaker.

Meanwhile, VDM remains in custody as legal processes continue. His loyal followers maintain that his arrest is part of a broader attempt to silence dissenting voices in Nigeria’s digital space.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the fight between freedom of speech and accountability is far from over—and Seun Kuti has just added more fire to the flame.
